FTP Testing
What is FTP testing?
The Functional Threshold Power Test determines the average number of watts an athlete can sustain for one hour.
Testing for FTP traditionally involves a one-hour time trial where a cyclist rides at the maximal power that can be sustained for the full 60 minutes.
However, this is extremely taxing on the body, very difficult to pace and very time consuming.

How is the test performed at Forza Performance?
Your FTP will be calculated using one of three methods:
-
Ramp test
-
2x 8 minute tests
-
1x 20 minute test

There are pros and cons to each, which we can discuss at the time of booking. Whichever test we conduct, however, will give you an estimate of your FTP and power/heart rate zones.

Before your test you will be asked for your bike fit measurements to ensure the WattBike you will test on will ergonomically match your road bike. This way you can perform at your best during the test.

You cannot fail a FTP as it is designed to find the limits of your ability and capture the most accurate possible snapshot of your fitness.
Why do I need it?
The primary use of this test is to set zones for workouts and to mark the upper limit of aerobic energy production.
It will allow your coach to understand your training zones and apply accurate training sessions to your plan to improve your fitness levels.
The FTP value can also be used to produce a power to weight ratio to give an indication of aerobic fitness compared with other cyclists of the same gender.
The more power you can produce in your current age and weight, the better your power-to-weight ratio.
